BRITISH WRESTLING
-----------------
BY DAVE DIAMOND
$fc8
Recently (o.k lets be honest it was ages ago) I went to the all star
wrestling promotion to watch some homegrown wrestling. This is the
second time I have done so,the first although no a patch on any u.s
stuff was alright I suppose but the second outing was just abysmal.
Why? well although I suppose the wrestlers put every effort into their
matches they all apart from a few were very, very boring. frequent
fluff, talking and other pathetic bumps took place from the amatures, the
only worthwhile wrestlers were doc dean and robbie brookiside who if
they ever leave the slimy miserable manager brian dixon will hit in big
time. Why is dixon such a smeg head? well i wanted to go into the
world of wrestling and arranged for myself to see gim to ask exactly
where to go,and what to do etc. When the day finally came, all those
dreams were shattered as no help was given whatso-ever,i went to find
this mass of slime in the dressing rooms and saw such wrestlers as
klondyke kate, doc dean, scull murphy and miss dynamite all of which
looked absolutly fed up and miserable. After the show began the first
match (of event 1) featured miss dynamite running down to the ring like
a rockers groupie,all smiles and handshakes,surely this wasn`t the
glum, spandex gal I just spoke to who told me that ol` brian wouldn`t
speak to me? Yep,all those smiles from the wrestlers were just a front
for the shabby backstage going-ons that no-one ever rarely sees or even
thinks about. At the end of event number 2 a year later one brian dixon
left the arena with a wad of cash,no doubt most of it going into his
pockets. After i watched the ring boys take down the ring to unveil the
most basic setup you could ever imagine one of the wrestlers was called
upon (after everyone else had left) to meet a disabled fan,he posed for
photos and generally was the nice guy. Talking of personas, one of the
bad guys a mr vain went to the bar for a beer during the event...no it
wasn`t a amature sandman clone but with this coupled with everything
else i`ve mentioned it shows what exactly goes on behind the scenes and
that wrestling,at least british wrestling isn`t what it was like we all
thought.
Incidently on the bbc2 documentary video diaries in which robert
brookside hosted, all thr wrestlers more or less said how old former
wrestler brian dixon (who supposidly took on such greats as superfly
jimmy snuka and tito santana) wasn`t a very nice person.
The event was dominated by selling crappy merchandise, even wwf clober
who`s names were mispronounced, the shoddy stuff was returned by some
`fans` only to be told to go away and that there wasn`t anything they
could do about it.
The canvas was like a matress..a very soft one and I would have
challenged giant haystacks (former loch ness monster) at the first event
before he was made into this disaster to a match and anyone who knows me
would know that I would have beaten him,be in real or fake I would have
beaten this 6`5 man (who was 7`1 by the time he reached wcw) and pinned
his shoulders to the canvas for the 1,2,3.......and the 4,5,6,7,8,9 etc.
No wonder british wrestling hasn`t got a future with the very promoter
telling me that there was basically no hope for me (I who am 6`2 and
well over 300lbs with an insatiable appetite for wrestling). With
encouragement like this who needs the brits when we have the pleasure of
knowing that at least the good old americans have beaten britain once
again by doing the right thing and creating wrestling schools and by
providing my fellow americans with great mat wrestling entertainment.
Challenges should be sent to the usual address.
